MSM Unit 1: Things Break Apart

Posted November 21, 2023 by ilee

Unit Overview

This unit spans across 6th grade math and science content. In math lessons, students will learn about ratios; specifically parts-to-parts ratios and parts-to-whole ratios, and reducing ratios. In the science lessons students will learn about matter, mass, molecules and atoms and specific characteristics of water before decomposing water into its components. The unit features the use, decoding and modification of collisions as causal mechanisms in models and the breakdown of compounds into ratios of components to bridge the math and science concepts. Throughout the unit, ratios and using ratios to predict outcomes are reinforced.

Concepts:

  • Driving Question: What happens when molecules break apart?
  • Real World Problem: Molecular beam collisions
  • Math: Ratios and comparing quantities
  • Science: Atomic composition of simple molecules and conservation of mass
  • Focal Mechanism in Code: If (action) then (reaction) featuring a collision between two entities as the action.

Lessons:

  • Lesson 1.1 Introducing Ratios
  • Lesson 1.2 Colliding Turtles Playground
  • Lesson 1.3 Decoding and Modifying Collision Model
  • Lesson 1.4 Matter and Properties of Water
  • Lesson 1.5 Molecular Beam Experiments
  • Lesson 1.6 Decoding and Modifying the Model
